Somiedo County is placed in the Southwest of Asturias . With almost 300 km 2 , it is considered one of the most representative ecosystems in the mountains of Northern Spain . The whole county is a Natural Park since 1988. UNESCO declared it Biosphere Reserve in 2000. Its rugged landscape, firstly shaped with the action of glaciers in the past, is covered today with a plant mantle in which predominate oak and beech forests. Somiedo is shelter for one of the most important brown bear populations of Western Europe and has a wide variety of animal and plant life, being probably the best testimony of natural life in the Cantabrian Mountains. |
